I’ve been shuffling my Cake collection this morning. I got burned out on them for a while in college (over-saturation, covering a few songs in the band i played in, and most of the people i knew being very into them, etc), but after a long time without listening to them they won me over again and sometimes it’s all i want to hear. And their sound really doesn’t change album to album. It’s not that individual albums aren’t coherent, instead it’s like their entire repertoire was written all at once. In the same way that their arrangements are almost scientific, the way that they sound seems to have been calculated from their first release with out the need or desire to go anywhere else. At least that’s what i hear when i listen to Cake, that’s why i probably got burned out on them in the first place, and lately that’s why i like them so much.
