Not long ago i posted a tune called ‘dreadful wind and rain,’ a recording by Jerry Garcia and David Grisman of a traditional folk song. It’s a song about a murder and a fiddle player who found the body and made a fiddle out of it. Awesome. Anyway, this weekend i decided to record it myself, so here’s my take!
Recently, i’ve been drawn to the genuine simplicity and raw transparency of folk music, especially when its recorded and maintains those qualities. I’ll probably be doing more of this type of thing, maybe even try my hand at writing some. For people who read this tumblr you’ve certainly seen me post plenty about my enthusiasm for tightly composed music arranged for bands and larger groups, jazz and improv etc… but there will always be something undeniably appealing about just sitting back and letting someone tell you a story—the nice thing about music is that you can tap your foot at the same time and it’s not impolite.
