Disappointmen-th of July
Although I had a GREAT weekend in St. Michaels, MD with my mom and my good friends Paul and Laurence, we did not get to see the consistently spectacular fireworks display that our little town offers every year.
First of all, you should know that my mom runs a Bed and Breakfast in a small town along Maryland’s Eastern Shore called St. Michaels; it is a town occupied almost exclusively by fisherman/waterman, retired folks, and tourists. The nearest town (12 miles down the road) is Easton, which is where the high school, the Wal-Mart, the fast food… you get the idea. People come by boat from all over the Chesapeake to see the St. Michaels fireworks—hundreds of weekenders anchor in the harbor and out a ways for a beautiful exhibition over the water, scheduled this year for Saturday the 5th.
Soooo apparently Easton hired the same company as St. Michaels to put on their show on the 4th, which was rained out, so instead of putting on the planned Saturday night extravaganza for all the weekenders and tourists in St. Michaels, they decided to (without informing any of these St. Michaels peeps) push it back to the Sunday night after everyone was obligated to head back home, and put on the Saturday night show for the ever present Easton locals.
So needless to say i was pretty bummed. I have seen this firework display almost every summer since i can remember, and this time we made it all the way down to MD, took the boat out, and sat there like suckahs for a show that never happened. We DID get to eat some delicious crabs and spend time on the water, but the soul-medicine is not quite as potent without those burning, booming beauties… Happy 4th, hope is was good for everyone!
